We had been driving for about an hour and a half when Taylor insisted we pull over so he could go to the bathroom...again. He had just gone 30 minutes before. Scott was in the van in front of me. As I pulled into the parking spot I noticed red lights in the dashboard flashing. The engine light went on and I saw smoke coming out of the hood. I wasn't freaking out yet...then I pulled into the parking spot and the car completely died. Then I was freaking out! Scott told me later that Taylor never even went to the bathroom. It was a huge blessing that it died at a rest stop and not on the freeway.
We spent the next 5 hours in the heat trying to figure out if we could fix the car or what we should do. We were pulling off at every exit to put in more water and oil...nothing was working. Finally we took it to a car repair shop and the guy told us it would cost a lot more to fix it than the car was worth. It was a hard decision but we decided to say goodbye to our Honda. We left it there at the shop and agreed that the man who owned the shop would sell it and give us half. We thought that was at least a better deal than paying to get it towed somewhere.
It was a sad moment. I think I cried...not just because we left the car, but because of the whole experience. It was so hot, the kids were screaming, and we had to leave a lot of stuff behind in the car. We stuffed everything we could into the van, but there was only so much room. On the upside, we got to drive the rest of the way together as a family, that was nice. We finally got to Charleston...we had never been so happy to get anywhere. We checked into our hotel (our house wasn't ready for a couple more days) and Scott had to get everything together to start school the next day. It was hard, but we made it.

Oh my goodness....your kids do look hot & look like they could have gotten lost in the van. I'm sorry about the Honda. It's always sad to say goodbye to your first car. :( I'm glad you were able to take pictures. Someday you can look back at them with the kids and laugh. We miss you and wish you all the best is SC.
Love, Val, Scott & kids :)
What an ordeal, Kim! I'm glad you made it there. And I'm glad I get to visit you so soon. I'll have to call you in the very near future. Your kids are so big. It's been way too long since our last visit.
Lots of love!
